Don’t you have to host Mumble somewhere? With Discord anyone can create a server and invite friends for free with no technical knowledge required. That’s a huge plus. I also remember RadCall was a thing for a while, at least where I am from.

What kind of surveillance? I remember 6 years ago an admin of a paid org on Slack could download all conversations, including private.
If we’re comparing services run by enthusiasts to a service run by a commercial company, then I’d like to add my five cents: at least lemm.ee is much more stable than reddit.com.
Because there’s no “Germany” in this movement. Different lands, different governments, different offices, etc.

To shine at something you have to put effort into it. Usually it’s the lack of willpower that makes us average. Look at exceptional people, they succeed in very different areas.
