And Israel is the most advanced nation in the Levant, I guess.
Meh, you and I both know that we cannot have an honest discussion of Mao or Stalin’s flaws on this instance, the same way we can have an honest discussion of Biden’s.
This is pretty rich coming from a guy who unironically defends Stalin and Mao for “doing what needed to be done.”
Edit - I mean there you have it. If I explain the meme I’ll get banned but I think any reasonable person can appreciate the whiplash.
This has also changed significantly since 2022 since Russia has effectively stopped exporting weapons. They used to be pretty close to the US in terms of total exports
I mean it’s a pretty academic question. Do the merchants of war drive global conflict, or are they necessary for national defense? Or is the issue more nuanced?
Russia historically makes up about half the world’s arms trade. Though that has declined in recent years due to Ukraine. So who is the chicken and who is the egg?
Fwiw, I tend to agree that arms manufacturers do play a role in driving global conflict, but it’s also clearly A responding to B and B responding to A.
Does that include weapons manufacturers in Russia and China?
Will this make my terminal faster?
This has always been the case. Maybe I work in a unique field but we spend a lot of time duplicating functionality from open source and not linking to it directly for specifically this reason, at least in some cases. It’s a good compromise between rolling your own software and doing a formal security audit. Plus you develop institutional knowledge for that area.
And yes, we always contribute code back where we can.
Nobody would fuck with churches if churches stayed quiet and stopped trying to impose their morality on the rest of us. Because of religion we are losing fundamental human rights. I’d be pissed too.
Yeah, the fact that parts of Lemmy actually seems to embrace radical Idlam because it “fights the west” is pretty uncomfortable.
Yes, a functional democracy requires that users have real political agency to engage with political topics, and that requires a high bar for individual liberty including press and academic freedom. A ton of people here will try to argue an absurd absolutist case that freedoms don’t matter because all governments engage in some curtailment of freedom, and that this all therefore reduces to preference.
The reality is that neither governments or institutions outside of government are perfect. Perfection is a vision which guides institutions, not a real endpoint. That’s why you should always be very critical of anyone who is quick to engage in criticism of your institutions, but is unwilling to engage in criticism of their own. This is the surest sign that someone is not acting in good faith, be it in real life, or on a notoriously sensitive meme community.
The entire reason they do it is because it validates their instincts to ignore the real evil in front of them. There’s a reason why Republicans in particular have embraced increasingly crazy conspiracies as their party marches onward towards actual fascism.
Meh, I’m not the one aggressively trying to shut down any conversation which doesn’t go hard enough on ML fan service. I actually came to .ml at first hoping to find a more academically oriented leftist community which was willing to engage with topics other than “let’s relitigate the cold war.”
You are obviously free to dismiss any criticism of this community as “NATO chauvinist propaganda” or whatever, just as im free to roll my eyes and say that the world deserves a better class of socialist.
I can just look at the modlog and tell that conversations about oppression are only allowed in one direction
Non-approved VPNs used to circumvent the great wall are absolutely illegal, though largely tolerated (and observed), but the authorities can and have used them as an excuse to bring people in.
Source: have actual been to China and played the whole “which VPN will work on which network” game many times.
To be fair, .ml bans you pretty quickly for discussing anything outside of a pretty narrow stripe of Marxist Leninist orthodoxy as well.
These sites also usually have the solution manuals
