I love genuine questions and people putting in the effort to love and understand each other better. If you come at me just wanting to argue I’m going to troll you back. FAFO.

My suspicion is that it’s supposed to be a prion which is a misfolded protein that causes other proteins to also misfold which eventually just makes a giant mess of your brain and kills you, similar to how a badly executed pivot table might crash your computer. The obvious difference is that we can’t reboot your brain. The closest we’ve gotten is probably ECT, but even that’s just mostly an in-joke between me and my coworkers about it just dumping all your neurotransmitters out so they can be marie-kondo-ed back into the right places.

  • 100% to all of this. I’m also finding as far as the mental health area specifically, we need more male therapists and inpatient workers to model healthy behaviors for some of the younger men (and the older ones, they’re just less likely to listen). I’ve found the most success in empowering the men I know who do have it together because they know better what needs to be said and often if there is misogyny at play the patient is less likely to listen to me saying the exact same thing anyway. So in addition to being a complex issue, it’s also one that takes men themselves to solve.

I also LOVE that you said “Tate et al,” not because I think he says anything worthy of wiping my ass on, but just because I love the air of scholarship it added to a topic I often innately associate with some of the seedier parts of the internet, but that really does deserve more of a place in both mainstream and academic discussion.

This is me every single gotdamn night I work. Everything will be fine then BAM the patient who constantly pees everwhere is logrolling down the hall coating the entire communal area in urine because no one would give them a hug while they’re covered in pee. The worst part is I’m not even describing any particular patient. If I had a dollar every time a hall is convered in some kind of bodily fluid or other excretion I’d be making 3-5 cents more hourly which is coincidentally the exact size of my last raise.

  • ☝️my mother in a nutshell. She said my grandmother warned her about what we now know as “The Second Shift” (working outside of the home then coming home and ALSO planning/doing most household maintainence tasks) when my mother was younger and was part of the first generation of women to work outside the home. But her understanding after years of this was somehow “mom was right” instead of “make him do his own laundry and if he refuses get a divorce.” At this point I’m just like women and the general cultural concept of femininity have shot ahead by miles in the last century. Men are welcome to do the same whenever they’re ready, but for now a lot of men are just coping by crab bucketing this shit and bringing women back down.

  • Alternatively, they’re arguing that there’s better ways to try to stop slavery than depriving yourself, and simply paying more for something is inadequate. You may as well just buy the thing cheaper then focus on fighting for overall social change. The amount you pay for the object does not free those slaves, but you giving less of it to Nike’s CEO might help you conserve enough for yourself to give you better footing while fighting for those social changes

Now, I’m also interested to see how the actual math works out as to the labor and materials costs and whether or not various companies directly or indirectly utilize slave labor, and which systems really do ultimately deliver the most worker friendly conditions. I’m not sure how I would get that info or how to know who to trust (medical journals are the academic text I’m used to parsing ). But the philosophical argument itself has a lot more to it than “fuck them slaves.”

  • Honestly I think AI will actually make a really cool tool for a lot of artists. They’ll be able to do things like focus on the core subject of the image and tell the ai to just put some grass over in that corner there and maybe a butterfly or something… nah a blue butterfly specifically so it goes with the models eyes. Or to help fill in minor NPCs in a video game or make the textures for the inside of openable crates. The part the big execs don’t understand is that you still need a human with a genuine and interesting idea. The AI is just the polish, and a polished turd is still a turd. And there will of course still be some kind of demand for media with the kind of attention to detail where every flower petal is hand painted. People still buy bespoke handbags and jeans and teapots and- literally anything.

To me the important part is making sure it’s a public resource. The cat is out of the bag and they’re not gonna stop. To me the most important thing now is making sure it’s something everyone has access to. A coworker also recently pointed out that making sure everyone has access to it means everyone knowing how it works. A lot of people are acting like this is some horrible evil thing to exist, but I would like to present the idea that it could be just as horrible and evil AND completely within the knowledge and under the control of the bourgeoisie.
